RULES AND PROCEDURE OF ADMISSION

01.        Reopening and Commencement of Classes

The University shall reopen after the Summer Vacation on 16.6.2008, Monday, and dates of commencement of classes shall be notified by the Registrar after reopening.

02.        Application Procedure

(i)         Candidates seeking admission into different UG or PG courses of the University shall submit online application available in the Ravenshaw University Website (www.ravenshawuniversity.com) on or before 16 June 2008.

         Applicants shall remit Rs. 160/- (Rupees one hundred and sixty only) in the form of demand draft drawn in favour of Ravenshaw University on any nationalized bank, payable at Cuttack.

Applicants are required to make the following entries on the reverse of the demand draft before it is despatched to the Registrar, Ravenshaw University.

2.      Application Form No.

 

Applicants are advised to send the demand draft by Speed Post or Registered Post, incase they are unable to submit it in person. Applicants may choose to use the services of private couriers but as regards the date of receipt of the bank draft in the university office, the confirmation of the university shall be taken as final and binding.

 

(ii)         Admit Card: On receipt of the draft, the University shall issue the Admit Card for the Entrance Examination online, which can be downloaded.

The Admit Card shall have two parts: one for the Candidate (Candidate’s Copy), and the other for the Office (Office Copy). Applicants shall affix two recent passport size photographs on spaces indicated, and provide necessary information in both parts of the Admit Card. They are required to bring both the copies (Candidate’s Copy as well as Office Copy) to the Examination Centre on the date of examination. No other intimation shall be issued for reporting at the examination centre.

The candidates having Admit Cards are requested to report at least one hour before the commencement of examination, for the scrutiny of their documents. They are required to bring the following documents to the examination centre.

a)      Admit Card, duly filled, with photographs – both Candidate’s Copy and Office Copy

b)      Photocopy of Certificate of the HSC or equivalent examination

c)      Photocopies of Certificates in support of reservation, weightage, and domicile

d)      Photocopies of Provisional Certificate and Mark sheet of the last qualifying examination

e)      Photocopy of Admit Card of the last qualifying examination in case the results are not published.

 

All documents will be signed by the candidate himself / herself as proof of self attestation. Veracity of the documents is subject to police verification, and submission of incorrect information with intention to defraud may lead to cancellation of admission, and make the candidate liable for criminal proceedings.

(iii)         Separate applications are required to be made for admission into various Undergraduate Honours Courses /Groups such as Arts, Commerce, BBA, IST, ITM, QEF, CBZ and PCM. Similarly separate applications are required to be made for each subject for Postgraduate study.

03.       Eligibility for Admission

      (i) UG Course: A minimum of 40% marks in aggregate (excluding marks in extra optional or fourth elective) in the Higher Secondary or equivalent examination, and a minimum of 40% marks in the University Entrance Test. 

Needless to say, only the students of Higher Secondary Science Stream will be eligible to apply for all Bachelor of Science Courses in the PCM and CBZ group, and for IST & ITM groups except QEF (See Grouping Pattern at para-9). However, students of Higher Secondary, of Arts and Science streams, having Mathematics as a subject can offer QEF.

In addition to the students of Higher Secondary Science Stream, students with Three year Diploma in Engineering, recognized by State Council of Vocational and Technical Education, Orissa are also eligible for IST and ITM group of the Bachelor of Science courses.

      (ii) PG Course: A second class honours (45%) in the subject in which the candidate seeks to pursue the PG course, and a minimum of 40% marks in the University Entrance Test.

However, for pursuing PG programme in (i) Biotechnology, (ii) Computer Science, (iii) Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC), (iv) Information Technology Management(ITM), the minimum eligibility criteria as laid down above is required to be secured in the following pre-requisite subjects mentioned against each.

a) Biotechnology: Honours in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry or any other subject relating to Life Sciences.

b)   Computer Science and ITM : Honours in Computer Science, ITM, IST or B.Tech. in Computer Science.

c)   JMC : Bachelor Degree in any discipline.

(iii) M.Phil Course: Postgraduate Degree in the subject concerned with at least 50% marks in aggregate.

04.                   Selection Norms

(i)         Admission to the University cannot be claimed as a matter of right, and may be refused by the authority without citing any reason. Conduct of the candidate shall be an important factor in the admission process. The decision of the Admission Committee in matters of admission shall be final and binding.

(ii)          Allotment of subjects for honours and electives will be strictly according to merit, and the outcome of counselling. Non-participation in counselling may lead to cancellation of admission.

(iv)         Admission into M.Phil does not require any entrance test, the merit of the candidate as per his/her academic career will be evaluated primarily on the basis of performance in the Postgraduate examination. In the event of a tie, precedence will be given to marks secured in the honours subject concerned. 

05.                   Date of submission 

Last date of submission of application online for admission into all courses indicated above is 16 June 2008.

 

06.                         Documents to be produced at Counselling 

i)         All original Certificates and documents in support of qualification (such as Mark sheets), School or College Leaving, Reservation and Weightage shall be produced in original. If results are not published, submission of provisional documents will be required.

ii)         Blood Group Certificate

iii)          Four recent stamp size photographs

iv)          Demand Draft for admission fees as intimated by the university office

v)            For Ex-service men and family members, Discharge Certificate in original

vi)          Four self-addressed Post Cards for further correspondence

 

07.                        Pattern of Questions and the Subjects      

(i)            For UG Courses:

Multiple choice questions will be set in the Entrance Test separately for all the three streams of Science, Humanities and Commerce. Separate sets of questions will be set also for the BBA and QEF.

The responses to the questions shall be made on the OMR sheets by blackening the relevant oval in HB pencil. 

Irrespective of the stream, each candidate shall have to opt for two optional subjects from the list (Annexure-I) over and above English, which is compulsory.

The course in each subject shall be the same as that of Higher Secondary level. The duration of the Entrance Test shall be for one and half hours. There shall be 25 questions in each subject.

There shall be negative marking for wrong answers.

(ii)            For PG Courses:

Applicants for various PG Courses (except Biotechnology, Computer Science, ITM and JMC) are required to take the entrance test in the subject concerned. The detailed subjects for the entrance test are given at Annexure-II.

Multiple choice questions will be set in the Entrance Test. The responses to the questions shall be made on the OMR sheets by blackening the relevant oval in HB pencil. The duration of Entrance Test shall be for two hours.

There shall be 75 questions and all are compulsory. There shall be negative marking for wrong answers. The Courses of Studies in the subjects for PG Entrance Test are enclosed at Annexure-III.  

 

08.                        Merit List

            The merit list will be prepared on the basis of (a) performance of the candidate of the University Entrance Test and (b) marks secured in the last qualifying examination, on 50:50 basis.

In case of tie, the marks secured in the entrance test shall take precedence, and in case of second tie, the marks secured in the last qualifying examination shall take precedence.

            Allotment of subjects shall be strictly on basis of the merit list. 

09.             Reservation of seats

Scheduled Caste(SC) - 8%, Scheduled Tribe(ST)-12%, Ex-Service Men and Family(ESM) -1%, Service Defence Personnel(SDP) - 1%, Physical Handicapped (PH) with above 40% disability – 3%.

In M.Phil Courses, one seat in each discipline is reserved for SC/ST candidates.

In case of non-fulfillment of reserve seats, they shall be de-reserved. 

In calculation of reserve seats, any fraction above 0.5 shall be counted as one.

ST / SC candidates from within the state can be admitted upto 18% (10% ST and 8% SC) beyond the sanctioned strength

10.                         Weightage

(i)   NCC: Cadets holding ‘B’ certificates and having passed the last qualifying examination in one attempt shall be given weightage of 10% marks. Of other cadets, those who have represented the State (as well as Central School or Sainik School) at the national level shall be given weightage of 5% of marks, subject to production of appropriate participation certificates, by DG, NCC or Director, NCC of the sponsoring state. 

(ii)  NSS: (a) State NSS Award- 5%, (b) National Award- 7%, and (c) International participation – admission on fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria.

      Certificate of participation shall be countersigned by Assistant Programme Advisor, NSS Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar.

(iii)            Sports and Games: (a) Representation of State, and representation at Inter-university or Inter-state level – 5%, (b) Representation of State at National level – 10%, (c) Representation of the Country at International level - admission on fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria.

      Participation events are to be recognized by the Director of Sports/University/Council of Higher Secondary Education. Participation Certificates are to be countersigned by the Director of Sports, Government of Orissa.

(iv) Co-curricular: Candidates who have earned distinction and won awards at the National or International level in debates, Group Discussions, Essay Writing, Histrionics, Dance and Music, Film Making and similar cultural activity shall be given weightage of 10% in case of representing the State at National level, and admission subject to fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria for representing the Country at International level.

(v)            Women: Weightage of 5% for seeking admission into courses such as Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Management (ITM), Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Telecommunication (IST), and Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics and Finance (QEF) which are not taught in local Women’s Colleges.

(vi)            Conditions for Weightage: (a) all weightage are applicable for Undergraduate courses. Weightage for Co-curricular activities are however available also for Postgraduate courses. (b)Events of participation for which weightage is claimed should have occurred within two years of the date of admission, (c) Not more than 10% of seats in each course can be allotted on the basis of weightage, (d) a candidate can claim weightage maximum of 10%.

 

11.             Admission from outside Orissa

         i)    The number of students admitted from outside Orissa to any undergraduate course shall not exceed five per cent (5%) of the strength, subject to a maximum of one per cent (1%) from any particular state.

         ii)   Such candidates who do not have permanent residence certificate for their Orissa origin from competent Revenue Officers, and those who have not passed their High School Certificate or equivalent examination from any school situated within Orissa shall be treated as candidates from outside Orissa.

               In case of non-availability of permanent residence certificate, candidates claiming Oriya origin shall have to prove bonafides on the basis of Land Records and/or educational certificates of any one of their parents. Mere residing certificates issued by Tahasildars will not be accepted.

12.                   Period of admission

      All admissions shall be complete ordinarily within four weeks of the publication of results of the entrance test, and within two weeks thereafter with payment of late fee.

13.                   Forfeiture of claim for admission

If a selected candidate fails to submit the documents and admission fees on the specified dates of counselling, the claim for admission shall be forfeited. 

14.                   Interpretation of Rules

The decision of the Admission Committee with regard to anything not covered in the official Brochure, or has given rise to dispute in interpretation of any rule, shall be final and binding.
